Hitting the pause button…

In the beginning of summer, I had an idea.
I thought:
“What if I speak openly about my solopreneur journey? Would it help others who want to leave the corporate treadmill and create a better life & career?”
There was no business objective. Rather, this was a passion project. For me, nothing would’ve been more satisfying than creating a vibrant community of people in similar situations.
I advertised One Step Closer in a single LinkedIn post and included a call to action in my other newsletter, The Unignorable.
To my surprise, 105 people signed up. Way more than I expected. I wanted something small and manageable, and this was the perfect size.
As you know, I kept pushing the community concept. I didn’t want this to just be a newsletter.
So, I included a call to action in all the newsletters encouraging participation in various challenges. In July, I hosted a group Zoom. And last week, I asked everyone to participate in a feedback session to understand what you needed from the newsletter or community.
Unfortunately, engagement was very low in all three scenarios. Two people joined July’s Zoom; three people actively responded to my calls to action; and three people participated in the feedback session.
This is not about numbers or popularity contests.
However, I concluded I’m not hitting the mark on my content for all of you—I must not be because of low engagement. Also, the newsletter isn’t growing organically through forwards to your friends and colleagues. This is a telling sign I’m missing the mark.
That’s not a judgment on you.
That’s a judgment on me.
So, I’ve decided to hit the pause button. It’s not the quit or stop button, but I also don’t know when (if ever) I’ll hit play again on One Step Closer.
If you have any thoughts or feedback, I’d love to hear from you. Just hit reply, and I guarantee I’ll read it.
